Swithland slate began as mud on a seabed something like five hundred and thirty million years ago, and it was got out of pits in Swithland Wood and at The Brand across the road. It went on roofs from about seventeen fifty, on headstones from the sixteen hundreds, and into kerbs, windowsills and sinks. The Great Pit was working at over a hundred and eighty feet down by the middle of the nineteenth century and stopped producing in eighteen eighty seven. Those pits are deep water now, so any Swithland slate laid in a garden here is second hand and has been for well over a century.
