The city takes its name from a river, and the river's name means a division. Sidney Addy put Sheaf with shed, as in watershed, and with sheth, both of them words for dividing or separating. It did the work as well as carrying the name. The Sheaf, along with the Meers Brook and the Limb Brook, made part of the border between the kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria, and it was still the line between Yorkshire and Derbyshire into the twentieth century.
