The open ground on the far side of the Dee from the centre carried three medieval names that all mean island: King's Eye, Earl's Eye and Newbold's Eye. It was cut about with drainage ditches and banked along the river until it would take cattle, and a good many of those ditches have silted up since. What is underneath is still flood plain, and it takes a mower badly for a long while after the water has been across it.
