Over nine hundred man-made caves have been recorded under Nottingham. They are cut into soft sandstone that comes out with hand tools, which is the whole reason there are so many: cellars, stores and a tannery, dug rather than built. Pottery puts some of them at twelve seventy to thirteen hundred, families were still living in them up to eighteen forty five, and eighty six were in use as air raid shelters by February nineteen forty one. Historic England has them scheduled as an ancient monument, so one that opens up under a garden is a protected structure before it is anybody's problem.
