The limestone under this side of town has its own name. The Barr Limestone runs along the eastern edge of the old parish from Hay Head across to Gillity Greaves, it was being quarried at Hay Head by fifteen ninety three, and it was worked underground as well as from the top. Along that line a post hole can find rock at two feet, and anything heavier than a fence is worth checking the old workings for.
